Free Comic Book Day ended up being kind of stupid- the store I went to had a "One Comic Per Person" limit and they didn't even have the Gyro Gearloose comic! They gave Elliot a Tiny Titans though. |

I've been in a Nintendo mood with my sketches, but I totally couldn't remember what anyone in The Legend of Zelda looks like. Link has a mullet though. |

| Friday Fives on Saturday |
[Apr. 12th, 2008|04:42 pm] |
1. Among your acquaintances, who’s the best screamer? I have no idea.
2. When was the last time you had to shout in order to be heard? Yesterday at AB Miree, naturally! Specifically, I had to yell at my sixth graders all day yesterday… especially the girls, and especially one girl whose idea of style is wearing ALL purple on Fridays. She looked like Grimace.
3. When was the last time you cheered for anything? Ellen and I went to Chili’s last night (We’re flat broke, but we had a gift card left over from Christmas). We ordered chips & salsa but the joint was hoppin’ and the waitress didn’t get them to us right away. When we gently reminded her, she rush-jobbed the chips to our table with the assurance that they were on the house because of the way. I gave a faux-cheer.
4. Whom did you last yell at? Someone at AB Miree, naturally! I think it was that girl I was just mean about… which I’m sure will bend someone out of shape, but walk a mile in my shoes before you judge me. She needed someone to yell at her for this specific thing she did. I’m not even going to tell you what it was, just that if she were going to a normal school with rules and discipline, she’d probably have been expelled by now.
5. When did you last lose your voice, or at least find yourself hoarse? I haven’t actually lost my voice this year (to my recollection). I did lose my voice a couple of times last year at Sat West, but I can’t remember the details. So last year.
The Comics Reporter's Five For Friday #117 -- Name Five Characters From Comics That Should Have a Mixed Drink Named After Them; Provide A Recipe For One Of The Drinks
***** 1. The Captain Haddock (straight-up rum) 2. Devil Dinosaur 3. The Dazzler 4. Starro 5. The Rainbow Raider (this drink would be incredibly sugary and served in all the best gay bars in Norway)
Normally I end up inking my sketches during lunchbreaks, and I still did that this week... but I also left my sketchbook at work this weekend. |

| We got us a Pippi sketch! |
[Apr. 10th, 2008|06:37 pm] |
Elliot's sick, my job sucks, and I was up all night so I'm not scanning any more comics this week. Instead, here's a drawing of Pippi Longstocking.

My sister and I went through quite a Pippi phase when we were growing up, based mostly out of seeing The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking in theaters. I think some of my initial interest was due to the actress who played Pippi. No, not the frightening troll-girl from the original badly-dubbed movies. Laura was similarly interested- she maintained that she wanted to name her first kid Annika.
Anyway, I went on to read the books and that's when I really started to like Pippi Longstocking 'cause, here's the thing... if you like superheroes as a kid, it's not a far leap to Pippi. She had superpowers, she had several sidekicks, she had a secret lair... pretty much all the standard superhero trappings. |

[Apr. 5th, 2008|08:32 pm] |

1. What type of food do you most like to eat? I'm a big fan of cheeses.
2. What type of food do you most like to cook? I've always really enjoyed baking and I've been told I have a small talent for it... very small.
3. What ingredient could you not live without? Is barbecue sauce an ingredient?
4. What do you never let in your kitchen? Ok, this isn't a foodstuff so I think I'm going slightly off topic here, but Ellen has a set of drinking glasses and a pitcher from the 1970's- frosted pink drinking glasses. The texture on them is so gross that I don't even allow them in the house. Literally, it makes me shiver just thinking about how gross these glasses are to the touch. Awful.
5. What is your favorite drink? In general, iced tea.
The Comics Reporter's Five For Friday #116 -- Name Five Character Progressions That Didn't Really Last That You Liked Anyway 1. Peter Parker becomes a school teacher 2. Batman lives in a swingin' penthouse at Wayne Industries rather than stately Wayne Manor 3. Captain Haddock becomes a millionaire (at least I think this didn't last) 4. Phoney Bone, the Dragonslayer! 5. Sara from "The Adventures of Barry Ween" becomes a hot barbarian-type she-warrior. |

Oh, I don't know if anybody reading this is interested, but I think Elliot and I are going to go to the Gem City Comic Convention next weekend. I don't know, I haven't been to a convention in years, but this one looks small enough where I won't have a panic attack Plus,. I can get Marv Wolfman to sign my Who is Donna Troy? Teen Titans book. |

I didn't imagine I'd have so many people wondering about last week's Sketchbook Saturday, involving a drawing I did for my sister.
If you remember, the drawing was of a sandwich shop filled with details about how exceptional the place looked. Here's part two of that lesson, with the text immediately following:

It is a steaming, hot 90 degree July afternoon when you are walking down Quail Street in downtown Albany. You are desperately hungry and in need of nourishment as you have not eaten since the previous evening.
You spot a man in ripped, muddy jeans and a tattered shirt wearing his baseball cap backwards over some not so clean hair handing out free sandwiches, and he shouts out at you asking if you would like to try one of his homemade sandwiches.
Now the sandwiches are loosely wrapped in deli paper and they are sitting in a cardboard box along with what appears to be his cat at his feet. What you believe to be his bike is propped up against the wall of a vacant run down shop. Flies are anxiously circling around the top of the box of food. The box itself is water damaged, ripped and battered. This man has a runny nose (no tissues to be seen) and is not wearing a uniform. There is no sign for a business standing near the man or the box.
You have seen quite a few people take him up on his offer as they have hurriedly walked past.
Do you eat the sandwich? Explain your reasons below.
( ...and now, the answers! )
Did you know yesterday was technically Superman's 70th birthday? In honor of the occasion, ( here's another Friday Five all about Big Blue. ) |

My sister is teaching a library internet class and she asked me to draw two pictures for her based on one of her assignments. She then used the drawings in one of her classes. Here's the first one, I'll post the second one next Saturday.

..and here's the text that goes along with the picture: A new sandwich shop opens in town. Your friends go and call you right away to rave about the place. The reputation spreads. The NY Times even sends a restaurant reviewer who writes a glowing review. You finally find yourself in the area and decide to try their sandwiches.
As you walk into the shop, you notice it's beautifully decorated, everything is spotless, there are no flies, and hanging from the walls are diplomas and awards that the sandwich chef has earned from various impressive culinary institutes. The chef graduated with high honors from the Culinary Institute of America with a specialty in sandwich-making. There's an autographed picture of him shaking hands with Wolfgang Puck with a plate of his sandwiches. He is in fact well known for his ability to make sandwiches.
And behind the counter is the sandwich chef with gold medals clanging around his neck from all of the sandwich-making awards he's won. He's dressed in a crisp clean chef's outfit with the big poofy hat. In the display cases are top-notch, organic, expensive sandwich-making products. You order something from the very creative menu and watch him carefully and expertly make it. He slices off big slabs of homemade bread, piles on the sandwich filings (of course, he's washed his hands and is wearing gloves), carefully arranges it with a juicy dill pickle on the side, and presents it to you on a beautiful plate. You pay him for the sandwich and sit down at one of the cafe tables.
Do you eat the sandwich? Explain your reasons on the back of this sheet. |

I know the last thing on most of our minds right now is more shopping, but I'd feel bad if I didn't mention this: Amazon's having an insane sale right now, possibly ending at midnight tonight, whereby if you buy one TV on DVD set for an already reduced price, you can get the second set FREE. Some of the sets they're hawking are garbage, but there are a couple of gems in the offering: NewsRadio, Rescue Me, Seinfeld, and my beloved Dawson's Creek. Click over here to check it out. |

This is a drunken sketch from a few weeks ago... it actually goes hand in hand with this comic, as both were drawn at the same bar in the same booth during General Montgomery Day.
The image on the left is by me... it's of Mary's friend Meg who kept begging me to draw her.
The image on the right is by my friend John, and it's of our mutual friend Justin. Justin, John, & I grew up together, and you can find out more about them in this "mini" mini-comic I drew for John's college graduation. John's definitely captures Justin's "essence" in this doodle. |
