1.If you knew that you had only one day left to live, what would you do for the 24 hours? Take the day off of work. Hang out with Ellen and Elliot. Ride one of the roller coasters at King’s Island. Draw some comics. Eat barbecue for dinner. See a movie. Get ice cream. Have “relations” with Ellen. Go to sleep!
2. Do you think that life has meaning? Yes.
3. What was your favourite childhood toy/object, or some of your favourites? I was an action figure enthusiast. I enjoyed He-Man figures, then those got phased out for Ninja Turtles, which gave way to X-Men… which then lead to Kenner’s Aliens figures. I wasn’t picky about mish-mashing all my figurines into one epic crossover play battle though- TMNT vs. Xenomorphs!
4. When you clasp your hands, do you put your right thumb over your left thumb, or your left thumb over your right thumb? Left over right.
5. If you had to teach the most ignorant person on earth the most difficult thing you have ever learned, how would you go about doing it? Flashcards and visual aids.
***** The Comics Reporter's Five For Friday #119 -- Name Five Characters From Comics Whose Blogs You'd Read
1. Jubilee circa 1992 2. Foggy Nelson 3. Jack Herriman (the main character in Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark's excellent Scene of the Crime mini-series from Vertigo) 4. Stinky (although I'd probably just make fun of it for being stupid) 5. Doctor Doom
I'm at my in-laws (or soon to be in-laws) this weekend, so no sketchbook scans today. To the one person who looks at those entries, I apologize. |

I forgot The Comics Reporter's Five For Friday #118 -- Name Five Locales From Comics You Like That Are not A) A Character's Primary Residence, B) Their Traditional Headquarters
1. The Barrelhaven (Bone) 2. B & J's Collector's Emporium (Hate) 3. Radu's (Green Lantern) 4. Planet Krypton restaurant (Kingdom Come) 5. That hollowed-out robot that The Thunderbolts were going to use as a base but never did. I'm not going to pull my comics out, but it's from the first couple of issues where Hawkeye joined the team. (Thunderbolts) |

[May. 2nd, 2008|08:47 pm] |
1. What types of board games do you like to play, if any? We like a whole bunch. Ellen and I play Scrabble pretty routinely but it's a frustrating game with E. as she takes forever and a day to make her moves and I get bored waiting for her. Even though Scrabble is as much a strategy game as it is a game of vocabulary, I'll freely admit that it's the word aspect of the game that gets me... which explains why I'm routinely beaten soundly by any and all comers.
I played a lot of Scattergories in Brooklyn with Melissa and Brad, usually under the influence of something or other.
I have a board game called Marry, Date, or Dump? that I bought for like $3 bucks at a Kay-Bee Toys outlet store and while it's pretty weak sauce, I played that a lot when I was living in Brooklyn, especially when I was on a date with a girl. It was a funny/stupid way to break the ice.
2. How often do you play board games? I would say we play board games about twice a month, give or take. Some months we might play more than twice... some months less.
3. What is your absolutely favorite game? Boggle. During my first year of teaching in Brooklyn, my teacher friends and I went through a Boggle craze wherein we spent ever lunch break playing the game. I like Boggle better than Scrabble because the constraints your under are a lot more challenging... and you learn the little tricks much quicker.
4. Describe your Monopoly strategy. My Monopoly strategy is to stay as far away from the game as possible as I hate Monopoly. Again, Monopoly's a strategy game. I can barely think past tomorrow... let alone twenty minutes from now when I'll be landing on St. Charles Place.
5. Do you feel that board games are becoming obsolete with the rise in computer and video gaming? I think there will always be a need for physical board games, for all the same reasons that movie theaters will never die. People need stuff to do when they're going out on dates. ****************************************
So for the first time ever, I'm going to Free Comic Book Day tomorrow. Although I'm a regular comic book reader/patron, I've never been to a FCBD because I always viewed it as a marketing strategy aimed at bringing new readers into a comics shop rather than plying already established readers with books... but I've always been interested in the hoopla and there looks to be a couple of good free books I'd be interested in getting. Depending on what my store has, I'm lookin' to pick up Tiny Titans, Hellboy, and Gyro Gearloose. |

| Friday five |
[Apr. 25th, 2008|09:33 pm] |
What's harder to live without, chocolate or alchohol? Definitely chocolate. I'm a social drinker but I'm ravenous for all things chocolate.
Does the colour yellow remind you of anything? Big Bird.
Who most annoyed you last week? In general, the school where I work. Specifically, on student in my afternoon classes who really should have been kicked out months ago. He's way more interested in disrupting classes and his classmates than he ever has been in his education.
Do you have a cutesy romantic nickname for your partner (or previous partners)? No.
What is your favourite Stephen King movie? I've always really liked the mini-series adaptation of The Stand that aired on ABC in 1994. The Sci-Fi Channel reran it this weekend. I still think that's one of the best adaptations of King novel... and certainly, The Stand isn't the easiest of his books to adapt for any medium. If The Stand didn't count because it was a TV movie and not a proper film, I'd have to change my answer to the 1980 version of The Shining. You know... the good one. |

| musical friday five |
[Apr. 18th, 2008|11:58 pm] |
...if I hurry, this will be the first Friday Five to be posted on Friday in awhile.
1. How often do you listen to music? A lot less since I started getting into listening to podcasts and audiobooks on my commute to and from work, but I would say I listen to music every other day.
2. Do you ever listen to the radio? What is your favorite station? I don't listen to any radio stations in Cincinnati besides 91.7 WVXU, and that's my favorite. I love Jean Cochran.
3. How do you find new songs, albums, or artists to listen to? Music reviews in magazines at Borders sometimes... more often, I just pick shit up from the library. A lot of times I'll hear music in movies and that'll lead me to something.
4. When was the last time you bought a CD? A digital music file? The last time I bought a CD was last month, I bought the new Ray Davies album Working Man's Cafe. The last time I bought a digital file, it was Loudon Wainwright's last album that had a bunch of songs from Knocked Up on it.
5. Do you think any of the technologies and distribution methods mentioned above will still be around in ten years? Why or why not? Yeah, sure, they'll all still be around... why not?
If there's a comic book Five for Friday, I'll post that tomorrow along with some sketches. |

| Friday Fives on Saturday |
[Apr. 12th, 2008|04:42 pm] |
1. Among your acquaintances, who’s the best screamer? I have no idea.
2. When was the last time you had to shout in order to be heard? Yesterday at AB Miree, naturally! Specifically, I had to yell at my sixth graders all day yesterday… especially the girls, and especially one girl whose idea of style is wearing ALL purple on Fridays. She looked like Grimace.
3. When was the last time you cheered for anything? Ellen and I went to Chili’s last night (We’re flat broke, but we had a gift card left over from Christmas). We ordered chips & salsa but the joint was hoppin’ and the waitress didn’t get them to us right away. When we gently reminded her, she rush-jobbed the chips to our table with the assurance that they were on the house because of the way. I gave a faux-cheer.
4. Whom did you last yell at? Someone at AB Miree, naturally! I think it was that girl I was just mean about… which I’m sure will bend someone out of shape, but walk a mile in my shoes before you judge me. She needed someone to yell at her for this specific thing she did. I’m not even going to tell you what it was, just that if she were going to a normal school with rules and discipline, she’d probably have been expelled by now.
5. When did you last lose your voice, or at least find yourself hoarse? I haven’t actually lost my voice this year (to my recollection). I did lose my voice a couple of times last year at Sat West, but I can’t remember the details. So last year.
The Comics Reporter's Five For Friday #117 -- Name Five Characters From Comics That Should Have a Mixed Drink Named After Them; Provide A Recipe For One Of The Drinks
***** 1. The Captain Haddock (straight-up rum) 2. Devil Dinosaur 3. The Dazzler 4. Starro 5. The Rainbow Raider (this drink would be incredibly sugary and served in all the best gay bars in Norway)
Normally I end up inking my sketches during lunchbreaks, and I still did that this week... but I also left my sketchbook at work this weekend. |

| Sketchbook Saturday & Friday Fives |
[Apr. 5th, 2008|08:32 pm] |

1. What type of food do you most like to eat? I'm a big fan of cheeses.
2. What type of food do you most like to cook? I've always really enjoyed baking and I've been told I have a small talent for it... very small.
3. What ingredient could you not live without? Is barbecue sauce an ingredient?
4. What do you never let in your kitchen? Ok, this isn't a foodstuff so I think I'm going slightly off topic here, but Ellen has a set of drinking glasses and a pitcher from the 1970's- frosted pink drinking glasses. The texture on them is so gross that I don't even allow them in the house. Literally, it makes me shiver just thinking about how gross these glasses are to the touch. Awful.
5. What is your favorite drink? In general, iced tea.
The Comics Reporter's Five For Friday #116 -- Name Five Character Progressions That Didn't Really Last That You Liked Anyway 1. Peter Parker becomes a school teacher 2. Batman lives in a swingin' penthouse at Wayne Industries rather than stately Wayne Manor 3. Captain Haddock becomes a millionaire (at least I think this didn't last) 4. Phoney Bone, the Dragonslayer! 5. Sara from "The Adventures of Barry Ween" becomes a hot barbarian-type she-warrior. |

| Friday five |
[Mar. 28th, 2008|06:50 pm] |
1. What have you sold? I've sold a lot of things. Of late, I sell books to Half Price Books every few weeks... but I'll tell my favorite "selling something" story in lieu of leavin' it boring.
When I was in college, toy collectors went apeshit over the World of Springfield Simpsons action figures. There were some cool characters produced in the line and I occasionally bought a playset or a figure, but I was in no way a completist- I had Mr. Burns and the Comic Book Guy playset and a few other random figures that sat on my computer monitor.
Around that time,I bought an issue of ToyFare, an action figure magazine, and they were selling an exclusive Glow-in-the-Dark Homer Simpson toy. Homer's wearing a HazMat suit and it's cast in that green "hold it up to the light" glow plastic. It was something like $7 bucks, I had $7 bucks, I liked getting mail, so I sent away for it and promptly forgot about the toy until a few months later when it showed up in my mail slot.
Now, I didn't really care about this toy. As I remember it, I brought it over to the common room of my friends' dorm suite in a stupid attempt to decorate and it sat out on a desk for an entire year, collecting dust. At the end of the school year, I took it back and put it on eBay along with a bunch of comics and stuff.
The toy sold on eBay for like $200 bucks. I paid my summer rent for two months with that money. Awesome.
2. What do you want to change? My job and my son's sleeping habits.
3. What does your answering machine / voice mail message say? I have no idea and I'm not going to go check. Sorry Friday Five!
4. Where did you go to school? Elementary: Maybrook Elementary School Middle/High School: Valley Central Undergraduate: SUNY Fredonia Graduate: Boston University
5. Friday fill-in: If you'd like to reach me, ______. If you'd like to reach me, and it has something to do with the comic e-mail me rather than leaving a comment. I forget about the comments all the time. |

| Friday Fives abound! |
[Mar. 7th, 2008|08:36 pm] |
1. What song would you sing to your newborn child? (OR if you already had a child, which song did you sing to him/her?) Lots of things.
At first, I tried these Rockabye Baby! CDs that are apparently really popular now- they're all over all the Babies R Us stores. Essentially baby-fied karaoke versions of the music of popular musicians, we got the Beach Boys and Coldplay versions out of the library. I played them a couple of times, but honestly they creeped me out a bit. It seemed like the kind of thing ultra-crazy-hip Park Slope parents would want to use purely to indoctrinate their kids into the "right" music and there's just something about that that kind of gives me the willies. I'd rather play Elliot the regular ol' Beach Boys. Or even better, have him discover The Beach Boys for himself, if he feels like it.
Recently I got out The Johnny Cash Children's Album and that was fun surprise.
...but I guess I got off on a tangent and the question was "What do you sing to your kid?" and the answer would be mostly anything. Songs off the radio. TV theme songs. Nonsense I make up. If you want specific songs, it's kind of hard for me to think of those, but I was singing Harry Belafonte just a few minutes ago, in honor of Elliot's first foray into solid-ish food. Bananas.
2. How do you think animals think? (i.e. in animal language, human language, etc.) In general, they probably just think on biological impulses. "I'm hungry, I'll eat. I'm tired, I'll sleep. I'm lonely, I'll curl up next to the big pink giant and see if he'll scratch my head".
3. As a child, did you have a dream to make a difference in the world? Can you describe your dream? I suppose I used to dream about being an artist or a writer. I don't know how big a difference either of those things would have made to the world.
4. Do you believe in God/a Higher Being? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
5. Do you believe in aliens? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
...and The Comics Reporter's Five For Friday # 112 -- Name Five And Only Five Elements (Situations, Plot Points, Relationships, Etc.) Of The DC Superhero Universe That Should Be Set In Stone
*****
1. Animal Man should always have a really solid, happy family life. 2. Superman should be the real guy... not Clark Kent. 3. Batman can have other relationships with the ladies, but it should be understood that Selina Kyle is his one true. 4. Superman should not kill, under any circumstances. 5. Starman Jack Knight should only be written by James Robinson (OK, this doesn't strictly fit in with with the nature of this Five for Friday... but I'm not wrong, am I??) |

| Friday Fives! |
[Feb. 29th, 2008|08:25 pm] |
1. How long ago did you join LJ? I've had a LiveJournal since 2001, but I've had this journal since 2004.
2. How did you find out about LJ? My college girlfriend had a journal. I looked at hers and liked the whole idea.
3. If someone introduced you to LJ, is s/he still on your friends list? Shannon and I were never actually ON each other's friends lists- we both decided that it would be smarter and more prudent if we kept separate journals... never mind that we could have done private entries or something to that effect. As retarded as it might sound, this in and of itself lead to problems- we'd constantly sneak peaks at one another's LJs and get into arguments about the content. At this point, I'm not even sure what Shannon's doing- I know she got married and apparently made up with her estranged sister, a huge bone of contention in her life... so hopefully she's cool nowadays. She certainly wasn't toward the end of our relationship.
4. Have you introduced anyone to LJ? Yeah, I introduced a bunch of my college friends to it. For awhile, we all kept journals, and it was a nice way to keep in touch. By and by, everyone else got a life. I think I'm the only one left who posts with anything approaching regularity.
5. Is your LJ public or friends only, and why? Aside from occasional "scandalous" comics, this journal is public.
The Comics Reporter's Five for Friday: Name Five And Only Five Elements (Situations, Plot Points, Relationships, Etc.) Of The Marvel Superhero Universe That Should Be Set In Stone 1. Eddie Brock should be Venom. 2. Elektra should stay dead. 3. Spider-Man should always be at odds with J. Jonah Jameson. 4. The X-Men should be an allegory for prejudice and racism- none of that "adventures in outer space" bullcrap. 5. The manly Marvel Universe men (The Thing, Wolverine, Nick Fury, etc) should smoke cigars.
EDIT: I thought of another one as I was drifting off to sleep last night. 6. Spider-Man & Daredevil should know one another's identities and be friends, even though the relationship doesn't really make a lot of sense if you think about it. |

| Friday Five: Pick five |
[Feb. 22nd, 2008|07:43 pm] |
1) ... things you can't live without. - Ellen - Elliot - Mom, Dad, & Laura - Melissa - books
2) ... of the best moments in your life. - 2001-2002, Fredonia: I won't think of specifics... even bad moments were best moments in retrospect. - Summer, 2003: Moving to Boston. Most carefree time of my life. - September, 2006: Kissing Ellen for the first time at General Montgomery Day - October, 2006: Ellen running down the street near Washington Circle wearing her tan dress with the belt. - September 2007: Elliot is born.
3) ... celebrities you can't stand. - P. Diddy - James Van Der Beek - Jade from "America's Next Top Model" (dubious celebrity) - Marvin "Mouth" McFadden from the show One Tree Hill. He was equally annoying as Chuckie Lee on "The Torkelsons" - the guy who plays Ross on Friends.
4) ... books you enjoy(ed) reading. Love Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli The Risk Pool by Richard Russo Dead Sea by Brian Keene Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire Daredevil- Hell to Pay, Volume 1 by Ed Brubaker & Michael Lark
Hey, I have a GoodReads profile, if anyone wants to find out more about what I read. Y'know, in case you're doing a report on me for school or something: my 'read' shelf:

5) ... items in your purse/backpack/on your desk. - Tons of pens - 90 Spelling/Vocab tests that need to be graded - Notebook for attendance and discipline in my classes - My "Classic Nintendo" GameBoy Advance - A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin (which I haven't started yet, which is why it's not on the list above)
...and some two links I found cool. Your mileage may vary.
The Warner Brothers Studio Store is Closed: I've linked this site elsewhere, but this blog perfectly encapsulates what I like about the Internet- no matter how obscure something from your life is that you remember fondly, chances are there is at least one other person out there with a website that shares that fond interest. In this case, it's a cataloging of things and stuff from the now defunct WB retail store. Going to the WB Store used to be a highlight of my trips to NYC as an 11 year old.
The Alan Moore Interview Index: It looks like they've pretty well catalogued every interview the writer's ever done here. Since Moore is a noted "tough get" for most interviewers, it's nice to see all of these collected in one place!
...oh and I forgot about The Comics Reporter's Five for Friday: Name Five Things In Comics That Confused You At One Time Or Perhaps Still Do -- Just The Source of Confusion, Not An Explanation Of Why You Were Confused Or What Turned Out To Be The Answer 1. Donna Troy- everything about her origin. 2. Later issues of Cerebus- I bought them faithfully for about a year and a half when I was in middle school. Cerebus floating on a rock. Couldn't figure it out. 3. This issue of Superman:
...but especially the story "The Five Stolen 'S' Shirts". What the hell is going on with that? 4. Youngblood #1! 5. As a kid, I was confused by shipping schedules in general. I didn't understand why a lot of my favorite independent comics took like, half a year to ship. Jeff Smith's Bone in particular. |

| Friday Fives! |
[Feb. 15th, 2008|09:47 pm] |
1. Favorite shoes? I like Sauconys, as detailed in this comic and in this comic! If I had to pick a favorite pair, it would have to be my blue and oranges... I liked that set so much that I bought one pair and wore 'em for a year... and then when those wore out, I bought the exact same pair again a year later.
2. What time does the sun set near you? Usually around 6 these days.
3. Do you like spending time in the sun? I like it OK.
4. Do you burn or tan? I'm Irish-born, so my skin kind of spontaniously combusts when exposed to UV rays, but I brave the elements anyhow.
5. Monopoly: yay! or no way! No way! I hate Monopoly. It takes forever and as in all board games, I don't play very stratigically and that always ends up screwing me. That being said, I do own a Monopoly board- it's the first Star Wars Monopoly game, back when having a not-normal Monopoly game was still considered oddball. These days, I don't even know if they sell regular Monopoly anymore.
...and The Comics Reporter's Five for Friday:
Name Five Vehicles from Comics that You Like 1. The bathtub-shaped Fantasticar from Fantastic Four 2. Killdozer! (For some reason, I owned this comic when I was a kid. It was a ridiculous mish-mash of possessed construction equiptment and ghosts) 3. Calvin's wagon 4. The Supermobile never made a lot of sense, but I liked the little metal fists. 5. ...and just to bring it back to the FF, the all ages Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four comic did an amazing story a few years ago titled Doom, Where's My Car? It's about Victor Von Doom's college roadster. Jeff Parker wrote the book and it just works on every level. |

| Friday Five: After |
[Aug. 17th, 2007|06:23 pm] |
What were your after-school hours usually like when you were in high school? When I got home from school, nine times out of ten, I'd take some kind of nap. I always felt wicked guilty about my mid-afternoon nap, which sometimes would stretch right until dinner time... but when I reflect on them now, I realize the time I had to get up for school everyday was fucking ridiculous and I probably needed every nap that I managed to squeeze in.
Other than that, I'd watch a lot of TV- the Bruce Timm Batman/Superman cartoons were in syndication at this point, so those were usually on.
What are the first moments like when you finally get home after a long day? I've only been back at work for two days, but so far, I walk in the door and Ellen's excited to see me. I check my e-mail and unwind.
Where do your thoughts normally turn after the December/January holidays have passed? I usually start looking forward to the next school break or my birthday.
When did you last allow someone to cut in front of you in line? Today at lunch. I let one of the other teachers go ahead of me.
What are you going to do right after you finish answering these questions? Ellen's finishing this fancy lemon chicken for dinner so we're going to eat that. After dinner... I don't know. My iPod is acting retarded, so we might drive over to the Kenwood mall so I can get it looked at. Or, we might just go out for ice cream. |

| Friday Five: Extra Resources |
[Aug. 10th, 2007|04:05 pm] |
I'm getting a bit tired of the LiveJournal Friday Five, as it's rarely updated on Friday and half the time the questions make no sense. I got this one from Friday5.org
You’ve always wished for it, and your wish has come true: There’s now a twenty-fifth hour in the day, but you have to spend it the same way every day on something you don’t have enough time for now, and it can’t be for sleep. How will you spend this extra hour every day? Way more question-reading than I'm used to.
Well, I suppose I'd spend it reading. I've had a lot of spare time to read this summer but when the school year begins that time vanished. Add into the equation my impending fatherhood and I think it's safe to say that I'll probably never get to read that John Adams biography that's been sitting next to my bed for a month.
As if that weren’t enough, an extra day has been added to the calendar, and you can insert it anywhere you want, except the day immediately before or after a holiday, and you have to spend it the same way every year. How will you spend this extra day each year, and when on the calendar will it appear?
I would insert the extra day somewhere in March and I would spend it watching movies.
Someone is giving you an extra twenty dollars per week (or its equivalent, if your country uses a different monetary unit) to spend any way you want, but you have to spend it the same way every week, and it has to be on yourself (no charity or gift-giving, and no investing or saving!). How will you spend this extra twenty dollars per week?
Y'know, I want to say I'd spend it at the comic book store... but I stopped buying comics for a month this summer and you know what I missed? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. That being said, I'd probably spend the extra money on CDs and music. I've always had a really piss-poor music collection and if given the opportunity, I'd love to have some extra cash to experiment buying music by genres and artists that I wouldn't spend my own money on. For example, lately I've been getting into bluegrass music, but I'm reluctant to go out and buy a random bluegrass CD.
Wow! When you woke up this morning, you noticed that someone snuck in and added a new room to your living space! The room is for your exclusive use, and it can serve only one FUN function (and it can’t be used as a bedroom or storage). What fun activity will be reserved for this new room?
This one is pretty easy- I'd put my drafting table in there and make it my drawing room. Right now the table is sitting in a pretty inconvenient spot in between our bedroom and Elliot's.
A magic backpack appears at your doorstep. It will hold any one thing you can normally carry by yourself, it will render that item weightless, and it will collapse to the size of a small pack of gum. What will you carry in it?
I am completely confused by this question. I think my problem falls on the word "can" in the second sentence; I'm almost positive that it's supposed to be "can't". That's the only way this question makes sense, right? If I CAN carry something around normally, why would I want that normal object weightless? I don't carry much super-heavy shit around with me. Am I stupid? I mean, of course yes, I AM stupid, but am I being stupid about this?
I guess, if we take the question at its word, I'd choose my 20 oz Sigg water bottle. 20 ounces isn't too heavy, but on the days where I decide to bring water from home to work, it always made my bag feel a little bit more hefty. |

thefridayfive: Randomness |
[Aug. 3rd, 2007|09:56 pm] |
1. If you were a fruit, which would you be and why? I choose Pear, because I'm already pear-shaped... and I bruise easily.
2. If you wake up and smell smoke, and you have to get everybody (pets included) out of the house safely, but you have time to grab one item, what would you grab? Probably my sketchbooks. Most of the pictures and photographs I own are backed up on discs at my parents' house... otherwise I'd say those.
3. If you were stuck on an island, who would be the one person you would want with you and why? If we're just being sentimental, Ellen. If this is some kind of "Stay up with your college friends until 3 AM and ponder every angle of the question" questions, I'd probably have to say some kind of survivalist so that I wouldn't be completely screwed by being stuck on an island.
4. If you could change one thing about your physical appearance, what would it be? I'm not much fussed by it, but I suppose if given a blank check of physical appearance change, I'd go for my fatty fatty fat fat.
5. If you could spend the day with one famous person, dead or alive, who would you choose? His fame is probably arguable to most people, and I'm almost sure the last thing in the world he'd want to do is hang out with me for the day, I'd want to hang out with Calvin & Hobbes creator Bill Watterson. The guy is a notorious recluse and an amazing genius- getting to spend the day with him would be amazing. |

| thefridayfive: something about owning things? |
[Jul. 27th, 2007|12:04 pm] |
1. What item would you be embarrassed for people to know you own? I own a copy of the American Idol spin-off movie From Justin to Kelly. It's a screener copy that Melissa gave me, but nevertheless, I own it.
2. What is something you splurged on just for you? Aside from an occasional comic book purchase, I've really curbed a lot of my "just for me" splurges lately in preparation for the baby. I bought The Monster Squad on DVD last week though- that was a $14 dollar descent into irresponsible spending.
3. What is something that you own with no real world value that is priceless to you? All my comic journals. Since 2004, I've filled over 12 books. They have absolutely no marketable value.
4. Do you collect anything? Well, comics. But also...
Minimates. Those are just my Marvel/DC 'Mates... I don't actually have room for my Lord of the Rings/Speed Racer figures and/or my Buffy the Vampire Slayer PALz. Embarrassing.
5. What item belonging to a friend/family member do you covet? Brandy owns a Nintendo DS that I borrowed for a few months. I want that. Also, any friend of mine who has Guitar Hero.
( Also, I saw The Simpsons Movie today ) |

| The Friday Five (on Saturday): Summer time...and the living is easy! |
[Jul. 21st, 2007|02:14 pm] |
Have you ever been to summer camp? I have never been to an honest-to-goodness stay away all summer type camp, but every other summer while I was growing up, I would go away to Boy Scout Camp for about a week and a half. The summer camp trips were something of a trade-off, as our scout troop had a marching band which raked in a lot of dough- on even numbered years, the Boy Scouts would go on an amazing band trip, more often than not to Florida to visit ALL the amusement parks. On odd years, we went to Camp Ranaqua.
It was a pretty fun time, even in comparison with Space Mountain. Ranaqua had a climbing wall, there was plenty of hang out time in addition to merit badge work, and the food was not as awful as all that.
Have you ever made a s'more? I have, but I don't consider a s'more to be worth all the work that you've got to put in to make it. I don't really like marshmallows, and the graham crackers always snap... not really all that fun.
Have you ever slept under the stars (no tent/tarp)? A couple of times... I had to sleep under the stars to get my Astronomy merit badge at camp. In the morning, we woke up covered in dew.
Have you ever had a member of the opposite sex sleep over at your house? Y'know, I never have.
What type of bed do you have (queen, twin, bunk, etc.) ? Ellen and I have a full size bed, which is currently dominated by Ellen and a gigantic pregnancy pillow called a Snoogle. I really hate the Snoogle, it takes up so much space. |

| Friday Five: Wait 'til the weekend |
[Apr. 6th, 2007|10:36 am] |
Monday was magical because... Brandy bought me Olive Garden for lunch after we spent an hour at school trying to network the new laptops.
Tuesday, what a tiring day, because... I stayed up past my bedtime goin' out drinking with Mary and Chris Kelly.
My Wednesday was wild & crazy because... I went to H&R Block and found out I owe a lot of money in local taxes! Woo!
Thursday made me think about... Not drinking so much, 'cause I went over to Melissa's for Top Model on Wednesday night and got blotto on vodka. (It's spring break, what do you want from me?)
Friday is the most fun because of... The trip Ellen & I are makin' home for Easter this weekend- my mom is SO excited about the baby, it's ridiculous. |

thefridayfive: Pets! |
[Jan. 5th, 2007|10:05 pm] |
1. Do you have any pets? If so, how many, and what are their names? I have a not-yet one year old cat named Achoo, although we call him Chewie. He's become UNBELIEVABLY annoying in the past two weeks. Technically, I'm also responsible for bringing a dog into my family's life, but Baby could hardly be considered "my" dog at this point.
2. What was your very first pet? Do you remember its name? I believe my first pet was a fish, which I'm pretty sure I received in lieu of a monetary gift from the Tooth Fairy. Laura and I got fish at the same time. I have no idea what kind, but I do remember how both met their untimely demise. Laura scooped hers out of the bowl and let it flop around on the floor because "it needed exercise". I apparently poured chocolate milk into my fish's bowl because yeah, "it needed chocolate milk".
3. Is there an animal you would never have as a pet? A bird. Birds are creepy pets.
4. What common pet have you always wanted but never had? Why not? This is kind of a weird answer, but I used to date a girl whose family had one of those huge poodles. Not the small kind, the kid that comes up to your waist. A more good-natured animal you'd never find... and also I very much doubt you could find a stupider beast on God's green Earth. Since then I've always had a soft spot for 'em. I've never had one because I haven't been in a position to have a dog in years- I don't think dogs like that are very good pets to have when you live in the city. Plus, they can be wicked expensive.
5. What wild animal (extinct or not) would you own if you didn't have to worry about its adjustment or the cost of captivity? Well, I guess a dinosaur of some kind, so I could ride it to work and crush cars.
For the most part, I've stopped "reviewing" things. It just struck me as kind of pointless one day- most of the stuff I reviewed, be it movies, TV, or comics, was stuff I went out and paid money for... so of course I would find some intrinsic value in it, even if it was bad.
That being said, All-Star Superman #6 is something special. It hits everything I like about Superman perfectly, from the big moments to the comic nerd nitpickery (I prefer a version of Superman where he was at one time Superboy, where he has a super-dog named Krypto, and time travel isn't a headache, etc.). Morrison even squeezed a ton of references to his DC One Million mini-series, which is one of those comics that I read the pieces when it first came out. |

| <lj user="thefridayfive": Famous stuff |
[Dec. 29th, 2006|05:51 pm] |
I like doing these Friday Five questions, but (1) lately they suck, and (2) they're NEVER updated. Are there any other Friday Fives out there?
1. Are you related to anyone famous or do you have any famous friends? If so, who? No I'm not, and no I don't.
2. Do you have any autographs or memorabilia? Some, but most of it is comic related... or goes back to my time in college working on our programming board. For example, I have a copy of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker that I got Henry Rollins to sign at a conference, or my Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot print signed by Geoff Darrow.
3. If you could meet any 3 celebrities who would they be? Bill Watterson - reclusive genius behind Calvin & Hobbes Ricky Gervais - anything but reclusive genius behind The Office ...and I don't know, some other celebrity.
4. What would you want to be famous for doing? I don't know. I find famous teachers annoying... like that Hillary Swank movie based on a real-life teacher looks way annoying. I suppose if I had to choose, I'd like to be famous for my drawing or my writing.
5. Who's the most annoying celebrity? Pauly Shore. |
